United Airlines lets passengers handle most of their travel needs without picking up the phone. From the website or the United app you can view a trip, choose seats, add bags, change flights and check in. Knowing where each tool is, and which requests still need an agent, saves a great deal of time when your plans shift.
This guide covers how to find and manage a United Airlines booked flight, how name corrections work and what to check before you pay for a ticket.
Searching and Booking United Flights
United operates from hubs in Chicago, Denver, Houston, Newark, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Washington Dulles, with partner connections worldwide through the Star Alliance. When you search a route, compare departure times, total journey length, connection airports and the fare type, not only the price. A flight that is $25 cheaper but adds a three-hour layover is rarely the better deal.
Economy and Basic Economy: Know the Difference
United's Basic Economy is its most restricted fare. Depending on the route, it may limit you to a personal item on board, assign your seat at check-in, place you in the last boarding group and prevent changes. Standard Economy includes a full-size carry-on, advance seat selection on many routes and the ability to change without a change fee on most itineraries starting in the United States. Read the fare summary carefully before paying, because the two can look almost identical on a results page.
What Is United Express?
United Express is the brand used for regional flights operated by partner airlines on United's behalf. These flights connect smaller cities to the hubs, usually on smaller aircraft. They are booked, ticketed and managed exactly like any other United flight, though overhead bin space is tighter and larger carry-ons may be checked at the gate.
Finding Your Reservation
Open My Trips on united.com or in the app and enter the passenger's last name with the six-character confirmation number from the e-ticket. MileagePlus members who added their number to the booking will see it automatically after signing in. If you booked through SkySparrows, use the airline confirmation number shown in your e-ticket email rather than our booking reference.
What You Can Do in Manage My Booking
- View the full itinerary and receipt
- Select or change seats
- Add checked bags in advance
- Enter passport and known traveler details
- Request wheelchair or other assistance
- Add a MileagePlus number
- Change or cancel eligible flights
- Request upgrades
Changing the Date of a United Flight
From My Trips, choose the change option, select the flight you want to replace and search for new dates. The system shows any difference in fare before you confirm. United has removed change fees on most Economy and premium tickets for travel originating in the U.S., but you still pay the fare difference when the new flight costs more. Basic Economy tickets are generally not changeable. Tickets issued through a travel agency usually need to be changed by that agency, so contact us if you booked with SkySparrows. Our flight change guide explains the fees that may apply.
Cancelling a Reservation
Tickets purchased directly from United at least a week before departure can be cancelled within 24 hours for a full refund. After that, refundable fares return to the original form of payment, while most non-refundable fares convert to a future flight credit. Basic Economy may be subject to a cancellation charge or may not be cancellable at all, depending on the route. For agency bookings, read our overview of United Airlines flight cancellation and refund handling.
Name Changes and Ticket Corrections
The name on a ticket has to match the traveler's government ID or passport. Airlines distinguish between two kinds of request:
- Corrections: fixing a typo, reversing first and last names, adding a middle name or updating a name after marriage or divorce. These are normally allowed, sometimes with supporting documents.
- Transfers: giving the ticket to a different person. This is not permitted. The original ticket must be cancelled under its fare rules and a new one purchased.
Requesting a Correction
- Compare the ticket with the traveler's passport or ID and note the exact difference.
- Contact whoever issued the ticket: United for direct bookings, or SkySparrows if you booked through us.
- Provide the confirmation number and the correct spelling.
- Supply documents such as a marriage certificate if the legal name has changed.
- Check the reissued e-ticket as soon as you receive it.
Do this as early as possible. Corrections become harder close to departure, particularly on itineraries that include partner airlines.
Updating a Name in MileagePlus
If your legal name has changed, update your frequent flyer account as well. United asks for documentation to make the change. The name on your account should match the name on your tickets so that miles are credited properly.
Seats and Upgrades
Seat maps are available at booking and afterward through My Trips. Standard seats are often free on regular Economy fares, while Economy Plus seats with extra legroom cost more. Upgrades to premium cabins can be bought with money or miles when available, and MileagePlus elite members may receive complimentary upgrades on some routes.
Baggage
Checked bag fees depend on the route, fare and status. Paying for bags online before you reach the airport is typically cheaper than paying at the counter. Check the size and weight limits for your fare; Basic Economy on some routes does not include a full-size carry-on.
Booking With Miles
MileagePlus miles can be redeemed on United and partner flights. Award prices vary by date and demand, so flexible travelers get the best value. Taxes and fees are still payable in cash.
Check-In, Flight Status and Boarding Passes
Online check-in opens 24 hours before departure. You can confirm your details, pay for bags and save a mobile boarding pass. The app also shows live flight status, gate changes and the inbound aircraft, which is useful for anticipating delays.
Looking for United "Near Me"
United no longer operates city ticket offices in most places. In-person help is available at airport ticket counters during operating hours. For most requests, the app, the website or a phone call is quicker.
Why Compare on SkySparrows First
Searching on SkySparrows shows United's fares next to other airlines on the same route, so you can see whether a different carrier or departure time offers better value. Our agents can also explain fare rules before you commit and assist with changes afterward.
