Taxes & Fees

What Makes Up the Price of a Ticket

The amount you pay for a flight is more than the airline's base fare. Government taxes, airport charges, security fees, carrier-imposed surcharges and other travel-related fees are added on top. SkySparrows wants you to be able to see what those extras are.

The charges listed on this page are the ones most commonly applied. Which of them appear on your ticket, and in what amount, depends on where you start and finish your journey, the airline and airports involved, your routing and the regulations in force. The figures shown when you book are specific to the flight you have chosen.

U.S. Federal Segment Fee

A federal segment fee can be charged on qualifying flight segments within the continental United States. Since it is assessed for each segment flown, the total varies with the number of takeoffs and landings in your itinerary.

Where it applies, the fee forms part of the fare and tax breakdown displayed while you book.

U.S. Excise Tax

Also called the U.S. Domestic Transportation Tax or U.S. Ticket Tax, the excise tax is charged on qualifying air travel within the United States and on certain connected itineraries.

It is normally worked out as a percentage of the taxable fare. Special rules govern flights to or from Alaska and Hawaii, where the tax may be based on the itinerary and the distance flown in the relevant U.S. airspace.

Travel Facilities Tax

Known as well as the Alaska/Hawaii Ticket Tax, this charge can apply to qualifying travel between the continental United States and Alaska or Hawaii.

The amount is set by the tax rules in effect on your travel date and by the particular flight.

Passenger Facility Charge (PFC)

Participating U.S. airports may collect a Passenger Facility Charge to fund approved improvements, passenger facilities, safety work and other infrastructure projects.

The charge differs from airport to airport and from one itinerary to another. Where it is due, it is included in the taxes and fees for your selected flight.

September 11th Security Fee

Officially the U.S. Passenger Civil Aviation Security Fee, this charge can apply to qualifying flights that depart from airports in the United States.

How much is collected depends on the kind of itinerary and on transportation security rules. Further amounts may be payable in some cases, for example where a journey includes a qualifying stopover or separately ticketed segments.

U.S. International Transportation Tax

Qualifying international flights that arrive in or leave the United States can be subject to the U.S. International Transportation Tax.

Depending on the routing, the rules may extend to travel involving U.S. states and certain U.S. territories or possessions. The amount varies with the route, the dates of travel and current regulations.

U.S. Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) User Fee

An APHIS user fee can be charged on certain international passengers or services arriving in the United States, Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Whether it applies, and at what rate, turns on where the journey began and on the requirements set by the responsible U.S. authorities.

U.S. Immigration and Inspection User Fee

Some international travelers arriving in the United States, Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands pay an immigration and inspection user fee.

When it is due, the fee follows the rules and rates fixed by the relevant U.S. government agencies and may appear in the total taxes and fees for your itinerary.

U.S. Customs Inspection User Fee

Eligible international passengers arriving from places outside the applicable U.S. Customs territory may be charged a customs inspection user fee.

Its application and amount can depend on your itinerary, your point of arrival and the customs requirements in effect.

Foreign Government and Airport Taxes and Fees

Travel outside the United States often attracts charges levied by foreign governments, airports or local authorities. These can include taxes, airport and passenger service charges, government fees, security and inspection charges, departure taxes and other assessments.

Such charges differ widely between countries, airports, airlines, destinations and itineraries. SkySparrows may show them within the total price or in the fare breakdown provided during booking.

Governments and airports revise their charges from time to time. The amount that finally applies is the one in force for your chosen itinerary when the booking is made or the ticket is issued.
